Day 41
Location: Dispersed in Gogebic County Forest
Distance: 13 miles
Weather: Cool & Nice
Mood: Excited to cross the state border
After a couple miles of hiking we finished the Wisconsin section of the NCT and crossed the border into Michigan's upper peninsula! We are now in the last state section of our journey with just a few days left before we are at Lake of the Clouds in the Porcupine Mountains. Today's route was mostly on dirt roads used by ATVs. There were several big ruts in the path that i am sure are fun to drive through with an off road vehicle but not quite as fun to navigate on foot. We entered the Gogebic County Forest in Michigan. There was a short section that looked like a recent reroute with plastic ribbons on the trees. The trail was well marked but the trail itself was not much of a path at all. I felt as though we were blazing our own path between markers. Fortunately this only lasted about a mile.
We came across the Bald Mountain memorial teepee which has a large fire pit inside and placards for visitors to sign their names on. There was also a nice view of the Montreal Gorge on our hike today. We ended the hike making our own dispersed campsite a little off of the trail as there are no designated campsites in this section. Pretty certain it will be just us at camp tonight.
